This is the second work in the 'Genderfull' photographic series which uses spotlights and shadows to play with what is visible or occluded, and explore the hidden and revealed versions of ourselves that we present externally or keep within to protect ourselves from harm. What does finding alignment and euphoria look like amidst gender fluidity? A femme pose can create a masculine shadow. If the shadow is all that's perceived does that erase my femininity? There is a conversation between body and perception of our bodies by others, and how we hold onto our authenticity in safety when confronted by those who would be violent towards us because of it.

This print is available to purchase framed or unframed.

Sebastian Rowlands is a non-binary trans artist living and working in Brighton. They are a final year Fine Art BA student and were featured on Channel 4’s 2022 life drawing series ‘Drawers Off!’ They have exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists (2025), and at numerous queer and feminist shows including Swamp Witches (2025), Textile Junction (2024), the Anti-Misogyny Club (2024), STOGGAF Queer Art Collective (2024) and the Socially Engaged Art Salon (2024). They are an advisory group member to Charleston and run a community quilting project exploring queer neurodiversity in Brighton.

Their practice investigates nuances of the trans experience as autobiographical and engages critically with political and cultural framing of gender non-conforming queerness. Through sculptural textiles, metalwork, installation, painting, and mixed media they employ haptic, contrasting materials to communicate abstract experiences of non-binary neurodiverse gender. This is driven by their interest in nuanced and non-literal explorations of what it means to be transgender. Their art practice is a vehicle to bring these issues into public discourse and to contribute toward social change.
