Shop a fine art print from photographer Jenny Ping Lam Lin's series "Garbage".
In this series, the term "garbage," often belittled and misunderstood, serves as the central theme. It acts as a medium and metaphor for the upper-level suppression experienced during growth, encompassing oppression from parents, educational institutions, industry power, and societal values. In the educational culture of China, being labeled as garbage can render all efforts worthless. Many Asian students, under intense mental pressure from an early age, go to extreme lengths to prove their worth.
The focus on electronic waste in landfills highlights how the orderly arrangement of discarded screens and machines resembles a graduation photo. Just as graduates face uncertainties and challenges after their studies, these discarded items wait to be discovered or recognized for their value. The confusion and pessimism about the future reflect the societal labeling that young people endure today.
